According to Moreno and Mayer (2007), there are 5 types of interactivity in multimodal learning environments: 1.) Dialoguing; 2.) Controlling; 3.) Manipulating; 4.) Searching and 5.) Navigating (p. 311). On this wikipage, you will:

Get Skitch to Take Screenshots

Before you start, it will be important for you to learn how to take screen shots with your computer and annotate them. I want you to use A FREE program called Skitch because:
  1. it is free
  2. it works on Windows and Mac
  3. you can take screenshots in multiple ways
  4. you can annotate your screenshots
  5. you will be addressing these ISTE Standards
    1. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
    2. model effective use of current and emerging digital tools to analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support learning
I do not do this with Kindergartners, but I do this with grad students because I can't see your screens and how you are interacting with the simulations.

1.) Pedagogical Content Knowledge Needed for the Forces & Interactions Kindergarten Lesson

  • a.) Content Knowledge - see Figure 1
    • Science
    • (i.) Pushes and pulls can have different strengths and directions

    • ELA - Speaking and Listening
    • (v.) Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.
    • (vi.) Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
    • (vii.) Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).
    • (viii.) Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.

    • Math
    • (ix). Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference.
    • (x). Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.

    The ideas below are only one way that a teacher could use this simulation to teacher their Kindergarten students about forces and interactions
    • (i.) Evaluation Strategy: Actions with the simulation by the students and student discussions

    • (ii.) Classroom Management:
      • A. Students will share an iPad to run the simulation
      • B. Students will work in pairs
      • C. Students will access the simulation by tapping on an icon located in the Science folder on the iPad home screen
      • D. Students will uses Technology (reasons to use it)
        • - to speed up time of natural events
        • - to save time through data collection
        • - to see things that could not otherwise be seen through models and simulations
        • - to record data that would otherwise be hard to gather

    • (iii.) Student Learning:
      • A. Students will construct knowledge by interacting with the simulation
      • B. Students will follow a projected model to learn the following skills: choosing a task, moving blue and red figures, showing values, starting the simulation and resetting the simulation
      • C. Students will be asked to take turns interacting with the simulation
      • D. The learning sequence will be broken into small steps to prevent cognitive overload
      • E. When students respond to the simulation, they will use their own words to describe the phenomena they are observing

2. Participate in a Forces and Interactions Kindergarten Learning Experience


In this learning experience, I would like you to pretend that you are Kindergarten student who is learning about forces. Since I can not be in your house, I have provided the teacher's directions for you to read. In order to show me that you have completed the directions, you need to take screenshots (I suggest using Skitch).
